From the Desk of Aileen... This might be one of the most common questions I get as a travel advisor: “Which cruise line is better for families: Disney or Royal Caribbean?” Like most things travel, the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. It really depends on your travel style, budget, kids’ ages, and what kind of vacation you’re hoping to have. So let’s break it down. No fluff, no bias (OK, maybe a tiny bit of bias, but I’ve booked hundreds of families on both). ⚓️ The Ships
Disney Cruise Line ships are smaller and more boutique-feeling, with five ships currently sailing and more on the way. The design leans heavily into classic elegance with a Disney twist...think Art Deco meets Cinderella’s castle. They're stunningly gorgeous. Royal Caribbean has some of the largest cruise ships in the world, packed with bells and whistles. These floating cities have zip lines, ice skating rinks, surf simulators, and Central Park-style promenades. TL;DR: Want huge, jaw-dropping ships? Royal Caribbean. Want something that feels more personal and manageable with young kids? Disney. 🎭 Entertainment Disney wins for Broadway-style shows, deck parties, and character meet-and-greets. If your kids (or you!) are into Mickey, Marvel, Star Wars, or princesses, this is a no-brainer. Royal Caribbean’s entertainment is more varied: think ice shows, aqua theater stunts, live music, and comedy. Great for older kids and teens who are "over" Disney. Looking for a casino? You'll find it on Royal. Winner: Disney for younger kids and character lovers, Royal for older tweens, teens, and adults wanting more variety (and a casino). 🏝 Private Islands Disney's Castaway Cay and the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point are beloved for their ease, beauty, and family-friendly vibes. Think soft sand, well-organized kid zones, and plenty of shady hammocks. The same excellent service that you find on the ship are at the islands. Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay is a thrill-seeker’s paradise, complete with the tallest waterslide in North America, a helium balloon, and relaxing beach areas. One thing to keep in mind are that there are a lot of upcharges on CocoCay. Vibe check: Disney’s islands are relaxing and sweet. Royal’s is high-energy and Instagrammable. 💰 Price Point Let’s be real: Disney Cruise Line is often more expensive. Period. But with that higher price, you get bigger staterooms, soda included, better service ratios, and top-tier entertainment without a surcharge. Royal Caribbean often has lower base prices and frequent sales, but once you factor in drink packages, specialty dining, and onboard extras, it can start to add up. The newer Icon Class ships do price higher than the older ships, making them closer in cost to Disney Cruise Line. Budget hack: Try to sail during the school year to save on either cruise line. And, right now, Disney Cruise Line is offering 50% off guests 3 and 4 on over 60 sailings in early 2026. 🧒 Kids Clubs Both lines have excellent kids’ programming, but they feel very different. Disney: Incredible themed spaces with long open hours and drop-off for ages 3+. Cast members are amazing, and the clubs are often the highlight of the trip for kids. Royal Caribbean: Royal Babies & Tots (6–36 months) is a plus, and the Adventure Ocean program has a great reputation, especially for older kids. But the vibe is a little more structured and less immersive than Disney. Best for: Disney wins for little ones. Royal gets bonus points for older kids and teens looking for more independence. 🍽 Dining Disney: I'm already on the record stating that Disney Cruise Line's rotational dining is second to none and faaaaar superior to dining on other cruise lines. Rotational dining gives you the same servers following you each night who anticipate your needs and get to know your family. Family-friendly menus, gorgeous themed restaurants, and surprisingly solid food across the board. Bonus: soda is included. Royal Caribbean: Tons of specialty dining options (for a fee), plus flexible dining times and room service. The Windjammer buffet is a crowd favorite. Pro tip: Disney wins. It's not even close. 🎯 Bottom Line: Which One Is Best for Your Family? Choose Disney Cruise Line if:
