Universal Studios is known for its thrilling, colossal roller coasters and massive simulator rides that fill your day with adventure. If you are traveling with neurodivergent family members, though, planning your trip can feel like an adventure in itself. From analyzing ride descriptions and POV videos to dissecting restaurant menus, creating an itinerary that your entire family will enjoy can be exhausting. As a special needs-focused travel agency, we understand the complexities and nuances of planning a vacation for everyone in your family. Fortunately, there are more services available than ever before that accommodate guests of all abilities, so everyone can feel included. While Universal Studios is often thought of as an adrenaline-junkie’s dream, many rides offer a much-needed break from more immersive rides. Whether you are traveling with neurodivergent family members or simply need a break from high-thrill rides, this list of toned-down, low-key sensory experiences is for you! We understand that everyone’s sensory needs are different. You may have sensory seekers who want all the thrill rides and input (like Just Add Magic Travel® founder Aileen’s kids), while others crave less stimulating experiences, such as the ones listed here. Universal Studios Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp This interactive playground and splash area, located in the new DreamWorks Land, is a haven for little ones of all abilities. The area features indoor and outdoor play structures with fountains, wells, and buckets that dump water on passersby below. There is also an indoor show with digital puppets where you can talk with Po live! Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres Another attraction inside DreamWorks Land is a Shrek-themed outdoor play area. Easter eggs and surprises from the Shrek franchise are found throughout the area, from singing frogs to Pinocchio sharing all-true facts. Trolls Trollercoaster This family-friendly, low-stimulation outdoor roller coaster in the Trolls section of DreamWorks Land is sure to be a favorite! Animal Actors On Location! Learn how animal stars are trained during this 20-minute show featuring birds, cats, and dogs who have appeared on TV and in movies. Its sensory-friendly location in an outdoor amphitheater makes it a great place to rest. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem While the ride simulates high-speed chases and moving ride vehicles, guests under 40” tall can sit in a stationary seat, which lowers the sensory experience. Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl This Simpsons-themed carnival ride has you soaring and dipping on an alien flying saucer. E.T. Adventure This classic attraction is the last remaining original ride in the park. You board a bicycle-like ride vehicle for a flying journey to help E.T. get home to his planet. This is a slow-moving, relaxing ride in a darkened environment. Islands Of AdventureCamp Jurassic & Discovery Center Dino lovers could spend hours at this Jurassic Park-themed outdoor play area and museum. Camp Jurassic has adventurous elements like suspension bridges and caves to crawl through, allowing kids to explore multiple levels. Afterward, cool off and explore the nearby Discovery Center, which is filled with dinosaur artifacts and exhibits. Pteranodon Flyers A slow-moving, glider-style ride designed for small riders. Guests must be less than 56” to ride, unless you are accompanying someone within the height requirement. If the rider is under 48”, another person must accompany them. Seuss Landing If you’re looking for low-stimulating, family-friendly attractions, you’ll spend a lot of time in Seuss Landing. This area has the highest concentration of sensory-friendly attractions at Islands of Adventure. Here’s a list of the low-simulating attractions you’ll want to experience:
Me Ship, The Olive Bring back childhood memories with this Popeye-themed play area with water cannons, slides, and climbing structures at Toon Lagoon. You may even get to meet the sailor himself, along with his love, Olive Oyl. Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges A water-soaking ride in a circular barge. It is completely outdoors and is a nice break from the many screen-heavy and motion-simulator attractions at Universal. It is also located in Toon Lagoon. You will get soaked! Epic Universe Astronomica Splash Pad This splash pad area at Celestial Park (the theme park’s entrance area) is filled with water fountains that dance and jump throughout the day. At night, watch the fountains dance and light up, creating a beautiful and soothing place to take a break and cool off from the Florida heat. Explore the garden areas throughout Celestial Park for a much-needed breather. Constellation Carousel This attraction offers a space-worthy alternative to a traditional carousel. The carousel animals move independently and around a large turntable, giving you multiple places to twist and spin, just like a galaxy. Fyre Drill Glide your way on a Viking ship through the canal system in the Isle of Berk while shooting water blasters at nearby passing ships. Other shooters can fire from the opposite side, so they do not need to wait. Viking Training Camp Let off some steam at this outdoor play area on the Isle of Berk. Climb rope ladders, explore tunnels, play instruments, and practice the physical skills your little one needs to ride a dragon. This area is huge, so your young Vikings will have plenty of time to play. Yoshi’s Adventure A slow-moving ride that gives you an elevated look at Super Nintendo World, a bit removed from all of the loud noises of the land. Hop on your own Yoshi and enjoy some of the best views of the park while you marvel at the land’s intense theming. Pro Tip: If you or your loved ones get overly stimulated easily, Super Nintendo World is best enjoyed in small pieces. This land is loud with a lot going on. Try to visit in the evenings when it’s less crowded. Universal Studios Sensory Rooms As a part of Universal’s commitment to provide accommodations for guests of all abilities, the theme park opened dedicated low-sensory rooms in each of its parks. These rooms are small and designed to give you a quiet break away from crowds, heat, and loud noises. The room features low-stimulating toys, a padded tunnel, and chairs. The room can be used for up to 30 minutes at a time, which is plenty of time for a break and a cool off in some refreshing AC with enough to keep your little one busy in a low-stimulating environment.
