Skipping the Lines at Universal and Disney: What Are Your Options?

When you’ve finally arrived for your theme park vacation, you don’t want to waste time waiting in line at the theme parks. That’s why Disney and Universal offer several paid services to help you skip the lines at park attractions. These options have changed in the last few years, so we’re highlighting all the choices available to you in 2025 and beyond:

Unlimited Express Pass—Universal

Unlimited Express Passes give you priority access to most attractions at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure through the attraction’s Express Lane. You can ride whatever rides you want, as many times as you want—with shortened wait times. When you want to use the pass to skip the line at Universal, arrive at the attraction's Express Lane, scan the pass, and go. No reservation or pre-booking required. Pricing varies depending on the day, time of year, and how many parks you plan to visit. You also get priority seating at Universal shows.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass—Disney ​

Lightning Lane Multi Pass, which replaced Genie+ last summer, allows you to skip the lines at select attractions throughout the Disney parks by booking attraction return times in advance. You can select up to three attraction reservations seven days before your arrival date if you stay at a Disney Resort (it's three days for everyone else). Disney Resort guests can also make selections for up to 14 days when their seven-day booking window opens (don’t worry, our team at Just Add Magic Travel® will help you make these reservations!). You can make your advanced Multi Pass selections beginning at 7 am on your booking day. Once you redeem your first Multi Pass ride selection at the park, you can make reservations for additional attractions one at a time throughout the day (based on availability).

Lightning Lane Single Pass—Disney ​

Lightning Lane Single Pass is reserved for the top-tier attractions at the Disney Parks that aren’t included with Multi Pass. These are the most in-demand attractions at the park and usually have the longest wait times on any given day. For these attractions, the only way to skip the line is to purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass or wait in the standby or virtual queue. The attractions available for Lightning Lane Single Pass include:

• TRON Lightcycle / Run
• Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
• Guardians of the Galaxy
• Rise of the Resistance 
• Avatar Flight of Passage ​

Lightning Lane Single Passes are the best way to ensure you can ride Disney’s most popular attractions without waiting several hours in line. If your family has any of these must-do attractions on your list, you’ll want to consider purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass for them.

Lightning Lane Premier Pass —Disney ​

Lightning Lane Premier Pass is a new skip-the-line option at Disney, which debuted last fall. Lightning Lane Premier Pass allows you to enter Lightning Lane queues without reserving a return time in advance. You pick the attraction you want to ride, head to its Lightning Lane, scan your ticket, and go. You can visit each Lightning Lane once per per day. Premier Passes are only available to Disney Resort guests in very limited quantities. Guests can purchase Premier Passes seven days in advance, beginning at 7 am.

VIP Tours ​

Another way to skip the lines at Universal and Disney is to book a VIP Tour. We go in-depth about everything VIP tours offer here. VIP tours allow you another way to skip the lines at Disney and Universal with more individualized experiences and many more perks than bypassing standby queues.

Disney VIP Tours
At Disney, you pay your VIP Tour Guide an hourly rate (with a seven-hour minimum) to escort your party (up to 10 guests) around the resort for a completely customized dream Disney day. You’re privately transported to the parks of choice (as long as you have valid theme park admission), fast-tracked through park security, and escorted through attraction queue lines. Your tour guide takes care of all the details, from arranging dining reservations to getting you to the attractions you desire as quickly as possible—even if that means hopping into a van backstage to be taken from one area of the park to another. 

Universal VIP Experiences
Universal offers two VIP Experiences. The group VIP Experience is a semi-private group tour with up to 12 people, including others from different parties. Your guide shows you around the park and gives you walk-on access to all rides and attractions, sharing facts, tips, and details about the park along the way. Depending on when your tour starts, a meal may also be included. You’ll also get Unlimited Express Passes for the rest of the day after the tour ends. Universal also offers a private VIP tour structured similarly to Disney VIP Tours.

Is Paying to Skip the Line at Disney or Universal Worth It?

YES! In most cases, paying for one of these skip-the-line options at Universal or Disney is well worth the cost. You’ll get the most value by using the passes at the parks with the most included attractions at the busiest times of year.
