Disney After Hours is a separately ticketed nighttime event at Walt Disney World. Disney After Hours began in 2016 and rose in popularity once Disney parks reopened after the pandemic closures. Since then, Disney After Hours has offered guests a unique way to experience the parks with minimal crowds on select nights during the year. What’s Included With Disney After Hours Admission?
Disney After Hours allows guests to visit one theme park three hours after it closes for regular day guests on select days throughout the year. These limited-capacity events give you plenty of opportunities to enjoy some of the park’s attractions with minimal wait times. Typically, you will wait in line for an average of 5 to 20 minutes per attraction—even at some of the park’s most popular rides! Seriously...Slinky Dog Dash is like 10-15 minutes tops.

Guests can enter the park at 7 pm on event nights, giving you two to three hours of “mix-in” time where you experience all of the theme park’s attractions and entertainment before the event officially begins. This is a great time to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks or grab a bite to eat at a table service restaurant inside the park. At Epcot, this is when you're going to want to hit those festival booths...those will be closed during the event.

You also receive complimentary snacks and drinks once the event officially begins. Complimentary refreshments include unlimited popcorn, ice cream novelties (like Mickey Bars and ice cream sandwiches), and bottled soft drinks.

Disney After Hours is offered during non-peak times at Walt Disney World. Here are the currently announced event dates and locations, as of September 2026:

​Disney’s After Hours are separately ticketed events. Prices range between $159 and 209 per person, depending on the event night. Since you get to enter the park two or three hours before the event officially starts, you get to spend up to six hours there. Complimentary snacks and drinks are included with your ticket price, but select quick-service food locations are also open. However, no table service restaurants are available during the event.

I am a big believer in the living list. You know, the list of places you want to go, things you want to experience, and trips you keep saying you're going to take “someday.” Because eventually, you realize that someday is not actually a date on the calendar, and there is a lot to be said for moving some of those things from the list into the “we actually did that” column.
If a Disney Cruise has been sitting on your living list, I have some good news for you.

Disney Cruise Line just added a ton of sailings to its current promotion, and there are some pretty substantial savings available. Book by August 30, 2026, and you can save up to $500 per person on select sailings from October 1, 2026, through March 26, 2027.

Obviously, I love a good Disney Cruise Line promotion. But as someone who spends a lot of time looking at these sailings, I don't want you to see “save up to $1,500” and immediately go find the cheapest cruise that qualifies. That's not necessarily how you get the best vacation.

The new dates include Disney Wonder sailings from San Diego, along with Disney Fantasy and Disney Treasure sailings from Port Canaveral. If you're a Disney family, you probably already know that the ship you choose can make a pretty big difference in the experience. If you're combining your cruise with Walt Disney World, for example, a Port Canaveral sailing can be a very different proposition than flying to California for the Wonder. If you're looking for a winter getaway, the San Diego itineraries may be worth a serious look...and become even more of a draw when you consider pairing it with a getaway to Disneyland Resort or San Diego/Coronado. And if your kids are at an age where the ship itself is going to be the star of the show, I want to talk to you about the ship, not just the itinerary.

This is one of the reasons I always recommend working with someone who knows Disney Cruise Line rather than simply treating it just like online shopping. There are a lot of little details that don't necessarily show up when you're looking at a price comparison. Which ship makes sense for your family? Is the itinerary actually a good fit? Is that stateroom category worth the extra money? Where is the room located? Are you better off spending more on the cruise itself or saving the money and putting it toward something else during the trip?

Those are the conversations I have with my clients all the time. And, yes, I am going to tell you when I think you should spend more money. I am also going to tell you when I don't think you should. I don't think everyone needs a verandah, and I definitely don't think everyone needs concierge. There are families for whom those upgrades make complete sense, and there are families who would be much happier putting that money toward another trip, a longer sailing, or an experience once they're onboard.

That is the part of travel planning that gets lost when we talk about travel advisors as if our job is simply to find you a price and hitting "Book Now." That's the easy part. Finding the right vacation is the part that takes experience.

And if you're the person who keeps saying, “We'll do that one day,” maybe this is the year you stop saying it and actually put the trip on the calendar. That's really what the living list is about: Not waiting for the perfect time, the perfect age, the perfect amount of money, or the perfect schedule. Sometimes you look at the options, figure out what works, and decide that the memories are worth it.

For our Disney Wonder sailing, Juneau was the port I had been looking forward to the most. While many guests were headed out on organized excursions, I had a different plan. I wanted to visit Mendenhall Glacier, hike to Nugget Falls, and explore Juneau on our own schedule. Traveling with a multi-generational family that included some neurodivergent teens , flexibility was more important to us than checking off as many activities as possible. And, while a helicopter excursion would have been amazing, it's just not something that was realistic for our situation. 

Looking back, renting a car was one of the best decisions we made during the entire cruise.

Why We Chose to Rent a Car Instead of Booking an Excursion
When I started planning our day in Juneau, I quickly realized that most excursions followed a fixed schedule. While that works well for many travelers, I knew our family would appreciate having the freedom to move at our own pace.
After comparing our options, I rented a seven-passenger Subaru Ascent through Like a Local. The entire reservation process was completed online, including signing the paperwork electronically before our trip. On the morning of our visit, I simply received a text message with the lockbox code for the vehicle.

The rental cost was $389 for the entire day. When compared to purchasing excursions for six people, renting a vehicle wasn't just more convenient. It was also a surprisingly economical choice.

Having our own transportation allowed us to:

• Arrive at Mendenhall Glacier before most of the excursion groups.
• Spend as much time as we wanted hiking to Nugget Falls.
• Drive the incredibly scenic Glacier Highway.
• Stop wherever something caught our attention.
• Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant outside of the immediate port area.

Most importantly, it gave us the flexibility our family needed.

A Relaxed Start to the Morning
Disney Cruise Line guests were able to begin disembarking around 6:45 am, but there was no reason for us to rush since we didn't need to meet for an excursion. Instead, we eased into the morning exactly the way we've come to love on Disney cruises: with lattes and room service breakfast.

One of my favorite Disney Cruise Line traditions is filling out the breakfast door hanger the night before. Waking up to coffee, pastries, fruit, and breakfast delivered right to your stateroom never gets old, especially when you're looking out at the breathtaking scenery of Southeast Alaska. (Pro-Tip: Order a carafe of coffee. It stays hot for SO long, so don't worry if you can't drink it all at once.)

Disney's Juneau dock isn't quite as centrally located as their berths in Skagway or Ketchikan. It's about a 20-minute walk into town or a very short shuttle ride. Our Head Server had suggested taking the complimentary motor coach instead of walking because black bears are frequently spotted near the dock. As it turns out, he wasn't kidding. That morning, we spotted a black bear from our stateroom before we had even left the ship.

When we disembarked around 7:45 am, a shuttle was already waiting, and within minutes we were downtown.

Picking Up Our Rental Car
Our shuttle dropped us near downtown Juneau, and after about a seven-minute walk we arrived at the parking garage where our rental SUV was waiting.

The pickup process couldn't have been easier. The keys were secured in a lockbox attached to the driver's window. I entered the code I'd received by text message, unlocked the box, grabbed the keys, and we were on our way. No rental counter, paperwork, or waiting in line. It seriously has spoiled me for car rentals.

Visiting Mendenhall Glacier
We arrived at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center around 8:30 am. Parking was plentiful, and paying the admission fee couldn't have been easier. Visitors simply scan a QR code and pay online for each person over 15 before entering the grounds or visitor center.

The visitor center offers excellent exhibits explaining the history of the glacier, local wildlife, and the dramatic effects of climate change, but the real reason most visitors come is the view. The glacier is absolutely massive. Even after seeing countless photos over the years, standing there in person was something entirely different. The vivid blue ice stretching across the landscape is difficult to describe until you've seen it with your own eyes.

While you can't walk on Mendenhall Glacier itself without a guided adventure, there are several excellent viewpoints and walking trails that bring you remarkably close.

Don't Skip Nugget Falls
If I had booked a standard excursion, this is the part of our day I likely would have missed as we'd have been on a time crunch. From the visitor center, it's about a one-mile walk along a mostly flat trail to Nugget Falls.

The trail itself is beautiful, winding through lush forest with constant views of the glacier in the distance. Along the way, signs explain what to do if you encounter a bear, so naturally we reviewed the plan with our kids before starting our hike. We never crossed paths with a bear on the trail (something that we were both relieved and disappointed about). We did, however, find a bit of "evidence" in the middle of the pathway that they'd been there. 

The hike ends at one of the most peaceful places I've ever visited. Nugget Falls crashes nearly 400 feet down a cliff into Mendenhall Lake, with the glacier rising behind it. Standing there, listening to the waterfall while looking across the lake at ancient blue ice, was one of those rare moments that makes you stop talking and simply take everything in. It was seriously life-affirming and I could have stayed there for hours. Nugget Falls was a port-highlight for everyone in our family.

Because we had arrived early and weren't tied to an excursion schedule, we were able to enjoy the area before most of the larger tour groups arrived. Eventually, a small group from a Seabourn ship joined us, but it remained wonderfully quiet.

A Sobering Reminder
After hiking back to the visitor center, we spent some time exploring the exhibits before returning to the parking lot. One sign stuck with me. Mendenhall Glacier has been retreating for approximately 200 years and has receded roughly one mile over the past 90 years alone. Seeing the historical photographs beside today's landscape was a powerful reminder that Alaska's glaciers are changing rapidly. It made me even more grateful that we had the opportunity to experience this incredible place.

Driving Glacier Highway
Instead of heading straight back to town, we decided to continue exploring. To be very honest, our goal was to find an area where we may spot some whales. We failed. It was okay, though, as we'd seen whales on glacier day. But even without whales, it was beautiful. 

Think towering evergreens, mountains, and water surrounded us for much of the drive, making the journey itself part of the experience. We eventually stopped at Eagle Beach.

As the name suggests, bald eagles are common here, but what surprised us most were the salmon. There were so many enormous salmon splashing and thrashing through the shallow water. It was fascinating to watch.

One thing to note: cell service becomes very limited in this area, so download maps before leaving Juneau.

As if the scenery wasn't memorable enough, we even spotted another black bear wandering alongside the road on our drive back toward town.

Lunch in Juneau
For lunch, we skipped the restaurants closest to the cruise ships and drove to The Sandpiper Cafe. From the outside, it's easy to overlook. Inside, however, we found generous portions, friendly service, and excellent food. Sometimes those unassuming local restaurants end up being the most memorable.

Don't Leave Without Trying a Salmon Donut
Before returning to the ship, there was one final stop I couldn't resist. Jellyfish Donuts has become famous for its Salmon Donut, and I knew I had to try it. Imagine a glazed donut topped with a smoked salmon and cream cheese mixture. It may not sound delicious, but it was fantastic. The donut was enormous and easily shareable. Even if you're skeptical, I'd recommend giving it a try simply because it's such a uniquely Alaskan treat. (Port snacks like this made me very glad for our late dinner seating. We wouldn't have been able to eat at 5:15 PM nightly, but 8:15 PM was absolutely perfect for us.)

Back on the Disney Wonder
We returned our SUV around 1:45 p.m., walked back through the port area, and boarded the Disney Wonder around 3:30.
With a little time before dinner, we explored the Oceaneer Lab during Open House, since our kids had long since aged out of the youth clubs but still wanted to see the spaces.

Because it was semi-formal night, many of the Disney characters were out meeting guests in elegant attire, making for some fun photo opportunities. That evening also featured one of my favorite Broadway-style productions of the entire sailing: Frozen, A Musical Spectacular. Even if you've seen Frozen countless times, don't skip this show. The creative puppetry, beautiful costumes, and incredible performances made it a standout.

Dinner was at Tiana's Place, where Mardi Gras was in full swing. Beads decorated the tables, Tiana and Louis made appearances throughout the restaurant, and the live jazz music created such a fun atmosphere. I had read so many warnings about the noise level in this restaurant, but didn't find it excessive at all. My favorite dish of the evening was the Northern Vegetable Turnover, which was every bit as delicious as it was beautiful.

After another incredible day, everyone in our family was happily exhausted and in bed by 10:30 pm.

The next morning, we'd wake up in Ketchikan for our final port day.

Would I Rent a Car Again?
Without hesitation, yes.

Renting a car gave us the flexibility to create exactly the day our family wanted. We avoided feeling rushed, experienced some of Juneau's most beautiful scenery, and enjoyed quiet moments at Nugget Falls before the crowds arrived.
If you're comfortable driving, especially with a larger family or group, I think it's one of the best ways to experience Juneau.
Mendenhall Glacier is absolutely worth visiting, but pairing it with Nugget Falls, Glacier Highway, and Eagle Beach transformed our port day from a quick excursion into one of the most memorable days of our entire Alaska cruise.

Walt Disney World: Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios
​If there's one place every Toy Story fan should visit, it's Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The moment you walk in, you've officially been "shrunk" to the size of a toy. Oversized building blocks, giant footprints, crayons, and game pieces surround you just as if Andy just stepped away from playing.

Slinky Dog Dash
This family coaster has quickly become one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World.
With just a 38" height requirement, Slinky stretches across the track as guests zip through twists, turns, and bunny hops around Andy's backyard. It's thrilling enough for older kids while still being approachable for families.
Pro tip: Lightning Lane or an early morning strategy can save significant wait times. This attraction consistently has one of the longest wait times at the park.

Alien Swirling Saucers
"The Claw!"
Inspired by the unforgettable aliens from Pizza Planet, this spinning attraction whirls guests around while upbeat music and colorful lighting create a playful dance party.
It's especially fun after dark when the entire area glows with vibrant colors.

Toy Story Mania!
This is one of my absolute favorite rides at Hollywood Studios. It's SO much fun and, if you're competitive, you're going to want to ride multiple times a trip. 
Guests compete in virtual carnival-style games while wearing 3D glasses. Scores rack up quickly, and many families make it a tradition to challenge each other every vacation.

Woody's Lunch Box
Even the food is themed in Andy's backyard. This outdoor quick service restaurant sells popular items like Totchos (tator tot nachos) and Lunch Box Tarts. 

The seating area looks exactly like a collection of toys and lunchbox accessories assembled into picnic tables. 

Roundup Rodeo BBQ
This indoor table service restaurant is the newest addition to Toy Story Land. The barbeque-forward family style menu is served up in an environment with tons of imagery from the films. Because everything is family-style here, you'll want to take a look at the menu before choosing this restaurant. It may not be best for the pickier Toys in the family.

Character Encounters
Keep an eye out for Woody, Jessie, and Buzz who are out and about meeting guests. And keep your ears open for the sound of drums. It means the Green Army Men are on their way!


Walt Disney World: Outside of Toy Story Land
Disney's All-Star Movies Resort
While this Value Resort is not my typical recommendation for my clients, it's a great option for those who love Toy Story. You'll find larger than life statues of Toy Story characters at this fun resort. Where else can you find a 3-story Woody?

Jessie's Roundup 
This dance party at Diamond Horseshoe features Jessie and friends. Part of Cool Kids' Summer, this gives guests a chance to hang with Toy Story characters....in air conditioning. Pretty priceless if you ask me.


Disneyland Resort: Pixar Pier and Beyond
While Disneyland doesn't have a Toy Story Land identical to Walt Disney World's, it offers several fantastic Toy Story experiences.

Toy Story Midway Mania!
Located on Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure, this attraction shares the same addictive carnival gameplay that guests love in Florida. The difference here? A Mr Potato-head animatronic serving as a carnival barker at the start of the queue. 

Jessie’s Critter Carousel
Jessie takes center stage on this whimsical carousel featuring woodland creatures inspired by the world of Woody's Roundup.
It's charming, colorful, and especially popular with younger guests. This is seriously the most adorable carousel. It's conveniently located near the IncrediCoaster, which makes it a nice option for the littles who are too small to ride that inverted coaster.

Pixar Pals and Entertainment
On the west coast, not only will you see Woody, Jessie, and Buzz, but guests also may see Rex and Bo Peep on Pixar Pier.


Disney Cruise Line: Toy Story at Sea
Many travelers don't realize that Disney Cruise Line offers some immersive Toy Story experiences.

Toy Story Splash Zone
Available aboard several Disney ships, this interactive water play area lets younger cruisers splash among oversized bath toys and familiar characters. Parents appreciate the shaded seating while kids can spend hours playing.

Youth Clubs
Disney Cruise Line's Oceaneer Club frequently incorporates Pixar and Toy Story elements into interactive activities, giving children the chance to step directly into imaginative adventures inspired by their favorite characters.

Pixar Day at Sea Sailings
Every year, Disney Cruise Line offers Pixar Day at Sea Sailings, which up the Pixar fun. You'll see more characters, activities, and deck parties that are inspired by Pixar films, including the Toy Story franchise.

Toy Story: Connecting Generations

Very few franchises resonate with grandparents, parents, and children. The original Toy Story debuted over 30 years ago. Many adults visiting Disney today grew up with Woody and Buzz themselves and are now introducing those same characters to their own children.

Disney has shared exciting new details about Monstropolis, the highly anticipated Monsters, Inc.-inspired land coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.
While construction continues behind the scenes, Disney is beginning to reveal the story, setting, and immersive experiences guests can expect when they eventually step into the monster world. If you're a fan of Sulley, Mike Wazowski, and the beloved Pixar film, this expansion is shaping up to be one of the most exciting additions to Walt Disney World in years.

A New Chapter for the Monsters, Inc. Story
Earlier this week, Disney released the above "news article," which gave fans their first in-depth look at just what is in store once this land opens up. Rather than simply recreating scenes from the movie, Disney is building an entirely new story that allows humans to finally visit Monstropolis.

Fans will remember that the original Monsters, Inc. story ended with a major discovery: human laughter produces significantly more energy than screams. That breakthrough changed the way monsters viewed humans. They were no longer a threat.

According to Disney, the city of Monstropolis has evolved dramatically since then. Fear of humans has given way to curiosity, and the once-strict separation between the two worlds is beginning to disappear. Now, for the first time, humans are being invited into Monstropolis as honored guests on H.U.M.A.N. day.

What's H.U.M.A.N. Day?
H.U.M.A.N. Day, which stands for "Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice" (awww!), is happening the day that you visit Monstropolis. The event serves as a cultural exchange between monsters and humans, celebrating the newfound relationship between the two worlds. Guests visiting Monstropolis will become part of this story, experiencing a city that is opening its doors to humans for the very first time. It's a super cute and seriously clever way for Disney to explain why guests are able to enter a world that was once considered completely off-limits.

Of course someoneneeds to be in charge of H.U.M.A.N. day. Enter: HR: Monstropolis' Department of Human Relations.

This organization has been tasked with helping monsters better understand humans and preparing the city to welcome visitors from the human world. The concept adds another layer of world-building and creates opportunities for the kind of storytelling and details Disney fans love discovering throughout the parks.

Exploring the Streets of Monstropolis
Disney has also shared a glimpse of what guests can expect when walking through the new land.

The city will feature bustling streets filled with monster-sized businesses, unique architecture, and recognizable locations from the Monsters, Inc. universe.

Among the locations Disney has confirmed are:

• Harryhausen's (!!!), the famous restaurant featured in the original film. I don't know about you, but I've wanted to eat at Harryhausen's since 2001. Also, I'm going to be seriously sad if this restaurant doesn't include an octopus animatronic. 
• The Glob Theater. I'm wondering if we'll eventually see the Monsters, Inc Laugh Floor moved here. Regardless, I hope that there will be an Easter Egg shout-out to the dearly departed Muppet-Vision 3-D inside the theater (sigh...).
• More storefronts and city buildings that bring Monstropolis to life

Disney appears focused on creating a fully immersive environment that feels like stepping directly into the movie.

Why Disney Fans Are Excited
We have a Monsters, Inc ride at Disney California Adventure (for now...), but it's a stand-alone ride in a back lot. It's nothing like what Monstropolis will be. The combination of immersive storytelling, beloved characters, detailed environments, and Disney's commitment to creating living, breathing worlds has many fans eagerly anticipating what could become one of the most popular areas at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Construction Is Well Underway
Recent images released by Disney show steel structures rising behind construction walls at Disney's Hollywood Studios. While Disney has not announced an opening date, visible progress suggests the project is moving steadily forward. As with many large-scale Disney projects, additional details will likely be revealed over time, including attractions, dining experiences, entertainment offerings, and interactive elements throughout the land. There's hope that more details will be released at the D23 convention in August.
